What is a Transportation Background Check?

DOT tests are conducted to check against the consumption of drug and alcohol by the transportation employees to ensure safe driving. They are regulated by the Government of U.S. and stipulated by Code of Federal Regulations.

The employees are tested in compliance with the FMCSA drug and alcohol testing program to check whether the drivers have consumed controlled substances or alcohol in the past six months. Any driver violating this law is not considered to be hired for employment.

A DOT Medical and Physical exam is conducted to verify that a driver who is operating a commercial vehicle does not suffer from any serious medical ailment to safeguard the driving to prevent any unwanted crashes and deaths.

DOT verifies the past employment history of the drivers for the past three years to check on any accident. This Safety Performance History of the driver brings to limelight the record of substance and drug abuse which would be helpful in hiring the employee.

Every driver is supposed to pass a Road Driving Test and file their due certificates in their qualification while applying for their job. This test is very important especially while driving very heavy vehicles, trucks and commercial vehicles.

Companies operating commercial vehicles are to follow regulations stipulated by FMCSA and complete DOT testing on their drivers. Vehicles with a gross weight of 10,001 or more pounds, passenger vehicles carrying 9 to 15 persons and trucks carrying hazardous materials should go through DOT testing.
